About the project

Surgery Department and Med-Surg Expansion - 2024

Heywood Development partnered with the hospital to plan and deliver a major expansion of the Surgery Department and Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg) Unit on the facility’s west campus. Serving as owner’s representative, our team guided this multifaceted project from concept through construction, ensuring that clinical needs, infrastructure capacity, and operational priorities were carefully balanced throughout every phase.

The project involved the relocation of several existing services to enable the remodel and expansion of the west campus, creating two new operating rooms and relocating the Med-Surg Unit to accommodate increased patient capacity. To support the expanded footprint, significant upgrades were made to the hospital’s mechanical, electrical, and medical gas systems—critical infrastructure that had reached capacity.

Much of the overall project consisted of renovation within active hospital space, requiring complex phasing and coordination to maintain uninterrupted patient care. Supporting departments, including pharmacy and imaging, were temporarily relocated and expanded to allow construction to proceed safely and efficiently. The project also included the enlargement of the pre-/post-operative and PACU areas, improving workflow and enhancing patient experience.

Undertaken in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project faced extraordinary supply chain and labor market challenges, particularly in procuring mechanical and electrical equipment. Through proactive planning, early procurement strategies, and close coordination with the design-build team and hospital leadership, we successfully mitigated potential delays and cost impacts.

The completed expansion provides the hospital with increased surgical and inpatient capacity, upgraded building systems, and modernized patient care environments. The project reflects our commitment to delivering complex healthcare facilities that meet today’s operational demands while supporting future growth.
